Chapter 5: Sky High Problems

The shrill, pulsing screech of the alarm clock rang throughout the bedroom, which was otherwise devoid of sound. I sluggishly drew an arm from underneath the cozy warm sheets and blindly swatted around the bed-stand for the clock responsible for the ruckus. I finally felt the raised surface of the snooze button graze the bottom of my paw and smacked it at a rate surprising for how slow every other part of me was going at that point. When all was calm again, I retracted my arm back under the covers.

"I hate alarm clocks..." I muttered at an unintelligible volume. It was several more minutes before I could muster the strength required to sit up and release myself from the cocoon of fabric. My body shivered from the sudden absence of insulation as I managed to peel back my eyelids and look around the room for the first time that morning.

Faith was already up and about, standing by the foot board of her bed and gently pulling a brush threw her thick wool coat. "Good morning~!" The Flaaffy chimed merrily.

Slowly, I scanned the remainder of the room and groggily  pointed at the bed adjacent  to my own. I muttered something like "Archie...?"

Faith darted her eyes back and forth between my guiding claw and the mattress in question numerous times before the mumbling registered as a question to her. "Oh, Archie? He got an early start today. He's already having breakfast by now. Something about meeting with someone before class I think."

Slowly, I climbed down from the mattress onto the floor and began stretching. In the midst of it, my leaf drooped down and covered up my eyes and I had to blow it away. I stumbled into the bathroom to brush my teeth, and as I put down the toothbrush, I instinctively grabbed a one of the dozens of combs Faith had left laying on the counter top. At least, until I remembered that as a Bayleef, I no longer had any amount of comb-able hair and tossed it. I had been a full Bayleef for days now, but there were several aspects I had yet to adjust to.

I lumbered back into the main part of the bedroom and took a seat on top of my bed once more. I waited for Faith to finish her grooming so we could go to breakfast together.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mrs. Andrews handed me a plate of Chesto Hash. I'd gotten this mound of dry, blue and brown berry shreds every morning since I had arrived on the base, but it was a bold day for me when I would try new foods. So, I took a seat beside Faith and Monica and began to down the arid, crunchy mass.

My eyes glided around the room for some in-meal entertainment. Nothing exciting, until my gaze happened upon a Vulpix girl in the midst of transforming. She had to be new, not only because she wasn't full-on pokemon yet, but because there was no way I could have missed her before.

The bits and pieces of her that had actually taken the form of a Vulpix were severely off color. The fur, instead of a red and cream coloration, shone with an aqua-sapphire and volt-yellow.

Her eyes were alight with excitement, and she seemed to be looking... Directly at me? It looked like she would bound across the entire cafeteria in a single leap if it wasn't for her friends holding her back.

Strange... It's not like I've accomplished anything note worthy here. Deciding not to think into it too much, I shrugged and looked around for something else to watch.

I wish I hadn't. Because the group of guys to grab my attention was a Breloom and a Ninjask; the two who had been menacingly glaring at me the first day I had arrived on base. And they had resumed their favorite activity.

The Breloom caught my gaze and made a cocky grin. He slid a claw across his own throat and mouthed that cliche sound effect.

Gulping, my eyes darted back down to my own tray. I twirled the food remaining in my plate with the fork, but I had suddenly lost my appetite.

I stood up and started to leave with my tray in hand. Or at least, I was leaving, until some object like a hose swept under my feet. Apparently, having twice as many legs doesn't mean twice as much balance, because I still tripped forward, plating my face into the scraps left on the tray.

I pulled myself up and brushed my breakfast out of my eyes quickly enough to catch a glimpse of a clawed vine retract halfway across the cafeteria and return to its owner, the Breloom.

Faith and Monica scrambled behind me and offered to help me back to my feet, but I refused the assistance and hurried out of the room. I didn't want them to see that underneath the red ketchup stains smeared across my face were cheeks stained the same red shade from embarrassment.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I scampered back to my room as quickly as possible without drawing attention. Slamming the door behind me and diving into the bathroom, I turned on the facet and dunked my head under the stream.

Once the remainder of the food had been scrubbed from my fur and down the drain, I dried my face and flung myself on top of my bed.

I stared up at the ceiling and thought aloud. "Bullies. Really? I can't be left alone here either, can I?" Back when I was still human, I was plagued  by bullies, and I was always too timid to fight them off. Sure, I suppose now I had all of these amazing pokemon powers to fight with, but so do they.

I sighed loudly, but considering the absolute lack of other life in the room, it didn't really matter how ear-shattering the noise was. "I just hope they don't give me anymore trouble..."
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After that little breakfast fiasco, the day went by without any more major hitches. By the time I had gotten to battle class and was practicing my moves on the dummy, I had nearly forgotten about the whole incident.

My Ancientpower was really starting to shape up into something really good, I practiced it all the time, more than any of my other moves, and by now I could manage to summon boulders as large as myself.

"What's going on, freshman?" I didn't recognize the taunting voice coming from behind me. I turned to find none other than the Ninjask and Breloom.

I winced. Agh, not them... What are they doing here?

I gulped and chuckled nervously. "Now, come on guys. I don't want any trouble."

The Ninjask zipped around my head. Man, I knew those things were fast, but it was even more impressive in real life. "Oh, you don't have to worry about that newbie, we won't give you any... As long as you join us. Otherwise..."

The Breloom cracked one of his clawed knuckles loudly. "We can't exactly promise you anything."

I attempted to back up slowly, but but the duo made advances as well. I defiantly had no desires to join their posse, but on the other hand, I certainly didn't want to have to fight them either. What was a guy to d-

"Now what do ya three think ye be doin'?" There was suddenly a large hand grasping my shoulder.

Dante.

"I don' think two on one's very fair now is it? Unless ye wee laddies want ta tussle with me t'at is!" Flames spurted from his nostrils  and the two backed up. They didn't seem to be confident about fending off such a powerful fire-type.

The Ninjask dismissed the challenge with a flick of his hand. "Bah, forget this." The two began to walk off, but not before the Ninjask turned around and shouted, "This isn't over! Let's see how long you can last without your friends!"

"Don' mind Speed and Lance. If they bug ye again, just come and find me." Dante assured me.

I nodded and smiled gently.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I didn't take the threat Speed had shouted seriously. I went through the rest of the day just fine. There wasn't a sign of the two anywhere.

Until after dinner, that is. I had left the cafeteria earlier than my pals to go catch a some show on tv.

As I made my way down the deserted hallways, there was a buzzing, then something rocketed at me and began to circle like a vulture, only at speeds too great for my mind to pick out what the object was. But whatever it was, it stopped me long enough for something else to  punch the back of my head. The blow was strong and caused my knees to buckle, but somehow, I managed to keep my body upright and standing.

The blur swirling around me finally slowed to a stop, revealing that it had been Speed the entire time.

"Are you ready for act two, fresh meat?" Lance was apparently behind me, taunting. The Breloom must have been the one who punched me.

"We told you we weren't done newbie." Speed jeered.

They had found the absolute worst time to do this. Everyone else was still at dinner, so I couldn't call for help. They were surrounding me, so I couldn't manage to escape. I was presented with only one option, and it was the one they wanted.

Lance launched a punch which I not only managed to somehow avoid, but wrap a Vine Whip around as well. I went to strike him with another of the vines, but Speed slashed at them with an Aerial Ace.

The sting of the blow caused the vines to retract instinctively. I flung myself around to face Speed. I tried to use Ancientpower, but one of Lance's hooks caught me on the side of my face.

"This isn't working..." I thought as an X-Scissor cut at my chest. "How am I supposed to beat them both at the same time?! If I try to attack one, the other counters!"

With one last feeble attempt to defend myself, I lashed out with another Vine Whip. Of course, the attack was so slow from all of my injuries and Speed was so fast, he caught the attack with ease and coiled it around my body.

He pulled the vine tight and kept me from moving. "Feel free to end this, Lance." He smirked.

The Breloom smirked. He pulled back a fist and a brown light gradually accumulated into his knuckles. "No, not that!" My mind screamed.

But there was nothing I could do to stop it. The Focus Punch was delivered straight into my gut.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I don't remember the exact point I passed out. I'm uncertain if the blow knocked me out almost instantly, or if it was a few blows later. All I know for sure was that I awoke in a nearly pitch-black room on a old, stiff mattress. A machine beside my bed served the purpose of displaying a squiggly green line on a black screen and producing a semi-regular beeping. A heart monitor? Was I in a hospital?

I sat up and looked around. The large room didn't look like any hospital I'd ever seen. More like a giant nurse office with hospital equipment in it. Was this a part of the base I had never been to?

"Ah, good to see you are awake and doing fine."

My heart skipped a beat, and the monitor proved that. Sammy had managed to creep up to my bedside and was now inspecting me.

"The heck, man! You can't just sneak up like that, you'll scare the living daylights out of people!" I screamed at the Sigilyph.

Sammy shook his head. "That is most certainly incorrect. While it is possible for someone to be scared to death, the circumstances are highly unlikely, and something as simple as my actions would not suffice."

I scoffed at his over-glorified excuse. "Whatever. What are you doing anyway?"

"I am examining your injuries. I happen to help out in the base's medical ward from time to time, and when you came in, I volunteered to care for your unconscious form. You're quite lucky, Lawrence happened upon the two hoodlums beating your limp body and chased them off. If he hadn't, they might have inflicted serious harm."

I glanced at my beaten body. Bruises and cuts decorated my body like hideous tattoos. Nothing seemed to be broken, but it was clear that everything was really sore and stiff.

"Don't fret, pokemon bodies heal themselves quite rapidly, and this base has developed some of the most powerful medicines known to our kind. You should be better in a day or two." Sammy assured me.

That was a relief, but as I quickly realized that this incident could very well happen again, I let out a sigh. "I just wish there was something I could do to publicly prove that I can fight. You know, something that will make them think twice about messing with me again?'

Sammy answered with the speed of Athena, as if he had an ideal solution in planning for days. "I know! We can have a pretend sparring match. In front of the base's population! I'll go easy and allow you to win. When those two see how you have defeated one of the greatest PRT members in this base, they will be too frightened to dare attack again!"

I looked at him with a questioning gaze. Why had that been the thing to instantly come to mind? "Uh... that seems risky on your end. What will everyone else say about you losing to a new guy?"

"Not to worry, PRT members will understand helping out someone in need. It's what we do after all. And if anyone decides they're tough enough to take me on after I lose, I can always still have the ability to knock some sense back into them."

I contemplated his offer. While it was true that this could solve my problems and there didn't seem to be a downside on my end, there was plenty of ways it could go wrong on Sammy's end. And I didn't want him to deal with them. Then again, he seemed to know he wouldn't have any difficulties....

"Alright, we'll try your way."

"Excellent! I shall alert Miss Gwendolyn of our arrangement."

Was that a... grin? No, no, it couldn't be. Sigilyph didn't have visible mouths most of time, and besides... Sammy had no reason to want to fight me for real.

Forget a description right now. It's midnight over here, so just be glad this is done and proof read. I'll put something decent here later. Maybe.
